Windows Or Mac? Here's Why I Use Both

by Chris Pine

This is a question that people have been facing for decades now. In the 80's, Apple ruled supreme. Then in the 90's Microsoft took over and Apple remained a small niche competitor. Lately, Apple has been gaining serious traction and has been slowly gaining market share on Microsoft. So which is better? In this article, I'll explore a couple considerations.

1. Programs available:

This is the primary reason that I still use Windows. There are many programs for Windows that simply aren't available on the Mac. For example, I love Microsoft Excel. There is a Mac version of Excel, but it is a slimmed down version that doesn't include crucial features like VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). There are many other smaller programs that are released which are only PC compatible. I absolutely hate discovering a cool new program that I want and then discovering that I don't have the right operating system to run it.

2. Usability:

Here is where the Mac shines. I have found OSX to be a vastly superior experience to Windows. It is quicker and much more responsive. It boots up faster, and it doesn't slow down as much over time. The hardware and software are designed by the same company, so they work together seamlessly. In my opinion, the Mac offers a vastly superior user experience.

The Verdict? I abstain. Both OS's have their pros and cons. That's why I use both. I have a Macbook with both Windows and OSX installed. I use OSX for the majority of my internet browsing, but when I need to do some serious Excel work or try out a new program, I boot up windows. I aim for the best of both worlds. Maybe it's something you could try out too.
