Why Buy a Webcam by Kathryn Lively
When we were young we talked often of the looming twenty-first century and the advancements in technology that would follow. Now that it's here, I couldn't tell you how many of my old schoolmates are disappointed that there are no flying cars or conveyor-belt sidewalks, but recent months have brought us a few exciting gadgets. Video phones and MP3 players amaze the gadget elite, as do the increasing availability and price convenience of webcams. What once could have been argued as a luxury may soon become something every computer user should use.
Why a webcam?
Is a webcam a mere novelty, a superfluous piece of hardware that will likely end up gathering dust? To some, perhaps, but a web camera that relays real time imagery - photos and streaming video - can be useful in enhancing online communication. Most online messaging programs like Yahoo! IM and AOL Instant Messenger offer options for users to display webcam images, and if a webcam offers streaming or frame by frame option to create a short video, one can use a cam to create video logs to upload to weblogs or sites like YouTube to share.
Speaking as a mother, a live webcam also offers the opportunity to capture spontaneity to share with family and friends. Webcams can save pictures of events as they happen, provided the cam is within range, and are convenient for immediate pictures to be uploaded to the Internet or sent via e-mail for classified ads. Offering old friends and loved ones the opportunity to view a cam as you chat online also lends a personal touch to any conversation, and the addition of microphone capabilities (some IM programs have a phone feature that lets you communicate audibly through your computer) further enhances the connection. It's not quite The Jetsons, but it's closer than we were when we were children!
Things to look for when considering a webcam include the cost versus capability. If you are looking for a device to snap instant photos and stream images during online chat, affordable webcams can be had for under seventy dollars. Take care to note which cams are compatible with your operating system and which cams can adjust to your hardware (in other words, does the webcam need to clip to something or is it freestanding?).
Once you have a webcam, more than likely you will make frequent use of the device to share a smile with family and friend as you chat and enhance your online visibility.
