Myspace Dating

by Clarence Phoon

After spending a long mundane period alone on Valentine day, I resolved never to be alone again. Being literally brokered, guess I had to use Myspace to test my luck. I reaped and I sow.

Low response rate: Given the cynical nature of people these days, I am not surprised that response rate is pathetically low. The lying rate is also there. You will encounter 19 yrs old woman "having kids". Women who mysteriously have "boyfriends" after leaving 'single' in their profiles for years.

This leads me to the next interesting question. Why do people still place their profiles online indicating they wish to date. Is it because of peer pressure? Is it because they have conflicting needs (i.e wanting to know the opposite sex but doubting their sincerity?)

Eventually, I finally got a response from a Thai after 'canvassing' 20 people for a week plus. In fact, this was just a beginning.

Looks turned out to be deceiving.

She had placed her photo 2 yr back on the web. Her features were a total different take. I bolted after a few lengthy hours. She was kind, helpful but ... just not my type.

The next woman I knew was pretty enthusiastic and exchanged a few Myspace messages. We eventually exchanged emails and phone numbers. Not too bad after all. Subconsciously, I know we wouldn't last due to her hectic work schedule.

I do guess that there are sincere people. It is just that the 'good' guys have already been snatched up. Unfortunately, there are a small fraction who are unable to commit or just can't find their ideal match in the right place or time. These are the people that I pity.

Those people refusing to reply are ironically 'your friends'. They allow you to filter your choices and the braveless or attached is eliminated.

I guess I gonna have a long run ahead. I sincerely hope that their profiles are not placed due to peer pressure.

I just hope to be attached by the next Valentine Day.
